What our guests say about a visit to

The Piggery

We welcomed our first guests to the Piggery in May 2024 and have been very grateful for all the kind words and encouragement we’ve received since then. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our visitors’ book.

What an amazing – and very special week in the charm and cosiness of a luxurious Piggery – but, more than that, the fortunate visitor just feels the special passion and dedication which Karen and Tom have invested in Hunting Hall over the years. Learning about conservation and biodiversity and seeing – albeit in a small way – the tireless efforts that farmers have to make in order to make a living off the land – and all that in challenging political times! A week is never long enough and Karen’s suggestions about interesting places to visit are very helpful [. . .] ‘Gods own Country’ has moved a little bit north – to Hunting Hall!💗

Thank you, Karen and Tom, for your hospitality and giving us the opportunity to stay on your lovely farm. The Piggery exceeds expectations, and the sun dappled walks around the farm feed one’s soul. The golden light on the wild flowers and trails coming home from Lowick was something I’ll never forget. I could write a tome – it’s a magical place. Thanks again – Pat and David ♥

After a squillion visit to Newt Cottage we have our first Piggery experience! We watched this space being transformed on previous visits and now enjoy the results! It’s fabulous! Beautiful day one, simply being here. Nick went to Wooler for provisions, I was just ‘being’! Later a lovely Pond Field walk with three deer in the distance and one that rose up in the field by the bird scrape, close enough to touch, then he ambled steadily away. Lots of finches and two mallards looking settled on the pond. [. . .] Awakened to snow! A good covering everywhere and pics from Tom of cattle in ankle-deep snow! An excuse to stay ‘home’ here and enjoy; we read, dosed and watched snow resting as peacocks pecked at it. Bliss. Home tomorrow but see you in March!! :) All our love.

It’s a delight to be here in The Piggery and on your lovely farm. Our week has flown by, just not long enough, and we’re sad to go (as always).Thank you, Karen and Tom , for taking so much care in the best ‘pig-sty’ in the world! So clean, comfortable, warm and cosy. We could easily live here. Thanks to a book on the shelf here we found a lovely day out: College Valley and Hethpool. So amazing and luckily, the sea trout were leaping up the waterfall (right time and right place). Such an impossible task for them, just awe-inspiring’ We slept like logs; recharged and refreshed. We’ll be back. Thank you, thank you lovely hosts for letting us share in your piece of paradise. Will miss it all, especially donkeys, gorgeous sheepdogs (so clever) and all the animals, and opening the curtains to reveal a beautiful day at Hunting Hall.
Caroline and Kevin, Lincolnshire, September 2025
A wonderful, peaceful and relaxing week in the lovely comfy and cosy Piggery – a real treat and a great ‘escape from the world’. Top this with all the tips and info makes this a really special place. Special thanks for the delicious goodies – especially the gluten-free ginger cake – quite magnificent.
John and Hilary, Hertfordshire, September 2025
Many thanks, Karen and Tom – a wonderful holiday-let, fabulous scenery, excellent hosts and adorable animals! We have enjoyed ourselves and have rested, but now back to our [own] farm! We’d love to come again.
Maggie and David, Suffolk, September 2025
We have had the perfect amazing relaxing week. Staying in The Fuffins in the past has been so special. We wondered if a venture into The Piggery was a smart move… it was!! ♥ Basically – we love both!! We knew we loved the area, the peace, the room to breathe, and we loved revisiting favourite places [. . .]. The most important thing in a way though, is that the magic and serenity that is Hunting Hall gave Brian peace and confidence to walk and use a new hip. I know our next step – to hope last minute availability is there to book The Piggery when Brian is ready for his next Hunting Hall physio!!
Jane and Brian, North Yorkshire, September 2025
We have stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and can honestly say that The Piggery is absolutely the best! So spacious and comfortable and we are coming back next year :) x Thank you for everything Karen and Tom
Rob and Shawn, Eastbourne, September 2025
Our first stay in The Piggery but not the first time at Hunting Hall. We love the space and comfort here. As in all your cottages, the attention to detail means a very enjoyable stay. We look forward to returning.
Alan and Hazel, Hampshire, August 2025
What a fabulous pig sty!! Fantastic hosts… thank you for arranging wonderful weather!!
Peter and Kate, Oxfordshire, August 2025
We have enjoyed a wonderful week visiting various landmarks in Northumberland. On a rainy day we took the train into Edinburgh, Each day it has been a pleasure to return to Hunting Hall. The Piggery is a beautiful place to stay and the farm is very special. We walked the farm trail and can see how much effort you have put into making it so enjoyable for visitors. Thank you, Karen and Tom, for our stay in The Piggery. It was beautifully clean and the apple cake was delicious. It was lovely to meet you and also get to know the animals/birds.
Sharon and Graham, Basingstoke, July 2025
Thank you for another wonderful week in The Piggery! We so enjoyed our stay; so relaxing with so many creatures around us (pigs, peacocks, puppies, swallows and, of course, Winston the cat!). Lindisfarne and Bambrugh were as beautiful as ever, and we visited Dunstanburgh Castle and Craster for the first time, having a delicious lunch in the Jolly Fisherman in Craster – really very good. A trip to Wooler and the Cheviots added variety, and great views! We also enjoyed the local villages, Etal and Ford (on our one rainy day). Glorious weather in lovely surroundings. Thank you also for the delicious cake, Karen! So glad we returned.
Sally and Steve, Reading, June 2025
Once again I'm sad as I write this because we’re going home, I just love being here. A mix of weather, however we lit the fire, drew the curtains, and we were cosy and safe. I love opening the curtains and we’re in the heart of the farm. At the moment the sheep are in and the cattle too, awaiting calves and lambs, so we awake to ‘mooing’ and baa-ing’. I will really miss not hearing it. Thank you, Karen and Tom, for the scones and for all your hospitality, it’s such a privilege staying at Hunting Hall and in The Piggery.
Caroline and Kevin, Sutton St Edmund, March 2025
It is such a long journey from home to here but absolutely wroth it! The Piggery is lovely, light and well-equipped, and the bed beautifully comfortable. We loved being on the farm, walking the trail and seeing the animals. Thank you for your enthusiasm, Karen and Tom. It is our first visit to Northumberland and it is beautiful, coast and country. It has been a wonderful relaxing time and, hopefully, we will visit again. Excellent cake! Thank you.
Julia and Granville, Kent, May 2025
Thank you, Karen and Tom, for allowing us to stay in the wonderful Piggery. It has everything, including the laundry swing – such a fab idea – and the come-on lights – I must get some! We loved the well signposted farm trail, studying the Ion Age excavation site, seeing and listening to the wildlife and sounds of nature. On the farm it was embarrassing to see Tom and Karen working timelessly and endlessly on the farm caring for the livestock and the land. The peacocks got used to us, one of them prancing about most of the day. The sheepdogs were so friendly and the newly born calf we saw being protected by its mother was delightful. The farm is so ideally located for the places we visited.
Jacqui and Tim, Essex, May 2025
This was our first stay in The Piggery – having stayed previously in both Newt and The Fuffins. It’s a lovely spacious and light filled space – we really enjoyed sitting outside patting Mist and Queen and watching Tom and Karen working hard! – as well as gazing at the swallows. [. . .] Just loved being on the farm, being with the animals, doing the farm trail and just relaxing in the sunshine in this slice of Eden! Thank you.
David and Janet, Warrington, May 2025
Another wonderful stay. With such a warm welcome and lovely accommodation it’s hard to leave. Tom and Karen, thank you for sharing this glorious place with us and see you soon.
Denise, Warrington May 2025
Such a lovely place with the most wonderful welcome. Thank you so much to you both. We have loved staying here again and will be back.
Lee and Peter, York, March 2025
Returning to Hunting Hall always feels like coming home. This time, wet and windy walks around the farm, discovering Ford Moss and the ponies, cosy times in the beautiful Piggery. Tom and Karen – you put so much love into this special place. Thank you for sharing it with us all. X
Andy and Alison, Edinburgh January 2025
Felt so at home in The Piggery. So spacious, warm and cosy, absolute luxury, we want to move in permanently! As always, Karen and Tom, you have thought of everything and have gone ‘above and beyond’ to make our little holiday very special. Walked the farm and admired all Tom and Karen’s hard work. Loved opening the curtains to see who’s in the farmyard; geese, donkeys, cattle and of course, Queen and Mist [the farm sheep dogs]. We’ll miss all this. As we’ve eaten all Karen’s gorgeous cake, we’re off! Feeling sad, however we’ve booked to come back. Thank you Karen and Tom, it’s been a privilege, and loved it all.
Caroline and Kevin, Spalding, December 2024
Thank you, Karen and Tom, for making my visit to special. The Piggery was a delight to stay in, well equipped and beautifully designed to give a feeling of space and cosiness at the same time. We walked around the fields and felt such a calm surrounded by nature at its best thanks to your hard work. I will certainly return to see how everything develops and matures. Thank you!!
Denise Shaw, Warrington, June 2024
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay – we enjoyed every moment. The Piggery is a beautiful place and the farm is a piece of paradise on earth.
Malcolm and Kay, Durham, September 2024
We arrived here after a terrible drive and both were immediately welcomed and felt at home. Cake very much appreciated! We have been lucky with the weather and thus glorious views. It’s been amazing staying on somewhere you would normally watch on the TV re farm life/diversifying/sustainability etc. The Iron Age boards display better than anything from English Heritage (we are members!). Thank you for everything.
Jennifer and Robert, Salisbury, August 2024
A wonderful stay, as always. The Piggery is such a lovely place and all your thoughtful touches make for a great holiday. We will be back again. Thank you so much.
Lee and Peter, York, September 2024
Dear Karen and Tom, Thank you for a lovely cottage and stay. Thank you also for the amazing cake, biscuits and treats. We have again had a lovely time in Northumberland and Scotland. Enjoyed every minute here. This is our third visit to Hunting Hall. Previously we have stayed in Fuffins Cottage, which was lovely. Once attain Premier Division standard with the ‘Piggery’ conversion. Well done!
Chris and Mike, York, October 2024
Thank you both for a wonderful stay. So comfy and lots to do: walks around your interesting fields, walks to the local shop in Lowick, trips to Ford and Etal. So enjoyed Heatherslaw Mill, Holy Island plus lots of ruined castles and, we agreed with Tom, Cheswick beach is a great beach [. . .] The farm is set in such a lovely area. Thank you.
Alexandra and Michael, Kent, September 2024
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in The Piggery, a great base for our first visit to Northumberland. Thanks for everything, Jean and Scott.
Jean and Scott, Bristol, October 2024
We came with great hopes for the Piggery, which were well and truly surpassed from the very start with such a warm and enthusiastic welcome by Karen and Tom. Wonderfully spacious and comfy surroundings which the relaxed nature of all the animals enhanced. Found several superb cycling routes, Cheswick beach and several genuinely friendly pubs and cafes throughout the week. The farm trail was a lovely insight into the passion that Karen and Tom rightly have for the place. Hope to return soon.
Tom and Cecilia, Newcastle, September 2024
It’s been really lovely staying in the Piggery. Tom and Karen, you gave us such a warm welcome and made us feel so at home. It couldn’t have been better. Thank you.
Brenda and Simon, Reading, August 2024
We’ve loved our stay in The Piggery. So many wonderful things to do – including ‘absolutely nothing’ sitting outside listening to the birds. Particular highlights were Ross beach and Bamburgh, a brilliant local shop at Lowick, great coffee at Pilgrims on Holy Island and Guru at Fenwick. A fabulous week of food and walking and chatting to people who are genuinely happy to see you and suggest and share their favourite places. Best wishes to Karen and Tom, we hope to be back. xxx
David and Lynn, Leigh-on-sea, August 2024
Thank you both for your warm hospitality and for a wonderful relaxing week’s holiday.
Mike and Polly, Somerset, July 2024
What a wonderful week! We have so enjoyed our stay in the Piggery; so comfortable and well thought-out. Loved the beautiful surroundings, the peacock antics and the swallows. Thank you so much for the delicious home-made cake and other goodies. We’re so glad to have returned to Northumberland after so many years and will certainly be back. Thank you!
Sally and Steve, Reading, June 2024
Wonderful, Karen and Tom. Our third stay at Hunting Hall; just what we needed, a much longed for rest. As always the cleanliness and attention to detail were spot on. We visited ‘The Dig’ [the annual archaeology excavations at the farm’s Iron Age settlement] and the people there spent some time showing us around and explaining so much. A lovely time at ‘The Piggery’ and THANK YOU Karen and Tom.
Phil and Chris, Suffolk, June 2024
Thank you Karen and Tom, you have been the perfect hosts and gave us a massive amount of useful information which came in very handy. The farm and the Piggery were the perfect place to stay. We have had a fabulous time and the weather was very kind to us; blue sky and sun every day (and only a tiny bit of rain!) It was very nice chatting with you both and it was lovely to hear all the animals and see the peacocks geese, lovely dogs and handsome cat wandering around. Thank you for a fabulous holiday! 💗
Neil and Gina, Bury, June 2024
Thank you for making us so welcome, Karen and Tom. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hunting Hall. [. . .] You have vision for Hunting Hall which is great in an age that is so profit driven – may you combine the two successfully well into the future! We hope to see you again, Karen and Tom - thank you for everything.
Pip and Erica, Somerset, May 2024
We stayed at Hunting Hall a few years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and wanted to return. We are delighted to be the first guests at the Piggery and found our stay all that we had hoped. As before, Karen and Tom have taken so much care and pride in setting up this great place to stay. The local guides and maps and the Piggery information sheet have been so useful in giving us another great holiday at Hunting Hall. We can recommend the farm walk and also the Black Bull in Lowick for an evening meal. Thank you, Karen and Tom.
