What Makes The Fuffins Green?

The Fuffins: caring for you, caring for the environment. Looking after our guests and caring for our environment are at the heart of our business. We hope you’ll have a very special holiday and enjoy all the luxuries of our green cottage.

Working with local craftsmen we’ve tried to preserve the peaceful old character of The Fuffins, which was once part of the Georgian farmhouse. The careful choice of natural period paints and finishes, free of harmful solvents, compliments the original exposed beams and brickwork. Antiques and special pieces of old furniture have been used throughout the cottage and we’ve tried to include recycled products such as the lovely glassware.

We use green energy in The Fuffins. An energy-efficient air source heat pump linked to underfloor heating keeps the cottage cosy and warm, whilst solar panels add heat to the domestic hot water. The Fuffins is well insulated with a mixture of sheep’s wool and conventional insulation to preserve the warmth of the home, and new double glazed windows have been carefully made to look just the same as the originals.

To help preserve valuable water there is an eco showerhead in the blue bedroom. All our toilets have a dual flush and, downstairs, inventive plumbing allows the toilet to be flushed with rainwater. In the main en-suite bathroom we have preserved the wonderful, original, deep enamelled cottage bath. Soak in water deliciously scented with the lovely earth-centred toiletries we provide then envelop yourself in our fluffy organic cotton towels. Everything for the cottage is bought with consideration for the environment – so you’ll know food and drink, bathroom toiletries and cleaning products will be gentle to the environment and to you.

We’ve tried to choose natural products throughout The Fuffins and ensure our wooden furniture is from a sustainable source. The lovely pine bedroom pieces were specially made for us by a small Yorkshire company. Natural feather duvets and pillows are covered in beautiful organic cotton percale bed linen, topped with a handmade runner knit from our sheep’s organic wool. There are many locally produced pieces of work throughout the cottage; paintings, embroideries and a latchook rug which includes hand spun wool from Hunting Hall.

The garden in summer is a profusion of flowers to attract insects. Untamed areas are a perfect haven for wildlife and the burn is home to all sorts of nature. We’ve planted fruit trees so that in years to come there may be a harvest to gather. The bird feeding pole is set quite close to the windows to be viewed from the comfort of a chair. Water for the garden can be taken from a rain barrel, or even the burn.

'Hunting Hall demonstrates perfectly that being green and providing high-quality accommodation can go hand-in–hand. The attention to detail such as organic cotton and hand-made quilts, a stock of local and fair trade produce as well as homemade bread ensure the guests go home happy. The repeat booking figures speak for themselves.’ Northumberland Coast AONB Awards for Excellence.

We hope that you will enjoy the gentle green luxury of The Fuffins.
