What our guests say about a visit to

Newt Cottage

We are always grateful for the kind words our guests write in the visitor’s book. Thank you to everyone who has contributed; your enthusiasm and encouragement are inspiring!

I've been trying to pay attention to what is so special about this place this week so I can take a little of the feeling home with me… All I can gather is that Northumberland has some kind of actual ancient magic seeping from the ground and Karen and Tom capture some of this magic in the perfect bubble of Hunting Hall. The only solution is to keep coming back for top up sips of the potion! As usual we can't thank you enough and can't wait until next time xxx
Lynda, Ian and Kirsty, Ripley, March 2019

It’s always such a pleasure to come back to this lovely cottage. The beginning of autumn is such a magical time on the farm…every time we do one of the farm trails there’s something new to discover; from the mystery and quietness of Meg’s Wood to the peaceful places to sit by the ponds… and the hedges almost competing with each other… the blue skies, crab apples, rosehips, rowan etc. … all come into their own at this time of year. Then there are the beautiful donkeys… always ready to come up and say hello, especially if there’s an apple or a ginger nut on offer… the pigs who seem to be able to sleep all day, the peacocks, the sheep. We didn’t spot the bull but Tom says he’s friendly! maybe stay on the other side of the fence! It was so lovely to watch Tom working with the dogs… what a team… then there are the barn owls, foxes, deer, hares… so much love and care is poured into this beautiful place… Thank you so much, Tom and Karen, for sharing it with us. xxx
John and Sue, Warrington, September 2025

Thank you for a really fantastic stay. We appreciated the warmest of welcomes, the immaculately clean cottage, and the thoughtful attention to detail and love which have made this place so special. Such a delight to return to the house and garden after days out. All the advice and practical tips were invaluable. What a wonderful, living project - we enjoyed learning something of its evolution and what an important and joyful legacy to the land and family.

We have had a lovely time staying in this wonderful cottage – it is all that we had hoped it would be; charming, comfortable with practical details that make it the perfect base for exploring. We’ve especially enjoyed being on the farm with daily rituals like taking an apple each morning for the donkeys before we head out, having a cat sat on the doorstep waiting for attention, while the mother peahen parades her youngster around the garden at the same time each evening. Karen and Tom have been so welcoming and thoughtful, and the card and present on my birthday was so lovely! Thank you both – we look forward to returning soon.
Lynda and Stephen, London, September 2025

Thank you both, Tom and Karen, for our lovely stay in Newt Cottage. This is the latest we’ve ever stayed, and we can recommend staying in winter with dark skies and stars so bright they seem to be falling out of the sky… the frosty walks around the farm, the donkeys, the pigs, the lovely dogs, the deer… we missed them last time we went home and we’ll miss them again this time. Tom and Karen, thank you for sharing this lovely place with us, we’re already looking forward to coming back! xxx

So glad to visit at last… Such a warm welcome from Karen and all the goodies and flowers, spotless and cosy cottage! Divine. And the garden very special. Tea and cake (yummy) kept us going all week and taking some home! Loved being here… and our successful walking days with beautiful weather enabled us to finish the Northumberland Coastal path to Berwick. Scenery is amazing. Enjoyed Ford and Etal; little gems tucked away. Delicious meal at Black Bull, Lowick and fish and chips van. Loved it all, feeling refreshed… ready to book again! Thank you for all your hard work, enjoyed farm trail too!
Heather and Peter Keogh, Cumbria, May 2024
Our 2nd visit to Newt Cottage, come back to do what didn’t get done last year… will have to come back, still lots to do! Karen and Tom, as before you’ve gone to so much trouble to make this cottage and farm visit heavenly. Will miss being here. Take care of your beautiful farm and all your animals, we’ll be back to get more tree guards! [Kevin and Caroline did some volunteer conservation work on the farm during their holiday, removing old tree guards from a hedge – they were a tremendous help!]
Kevin and Caroline, Spalding, May 2024

Here we are again. Back for the fourth time and by no means our last...It's like our second home here at Newt Cottage. Karen and Tom are really special people who make a difference to the land, environment and to people they meet (like us)....Northumberland is without doubt a beautiful, special place. Hunting Hall is our bolt home. Thank you both so much for all you do. We strive to live as eco friendly as possible. Being here is definitely where we find peace.

Thank you both so much, we’ll be back, that’s if we can force ourselves to leave.

Felt so at home here, thank you, Karen and Tom, you’ve worked so hard to make our stay with you very special. . . Everything has been amazing, however donkey deliver of Easter Eggs was just the best. First time on a farm so loved all that too. Lambing time is to be recommended. Going to miss waking up to ewes and lambs calling to each other. Going to miss this little piece of Paradise.

Also visited all our favourite places and spaces but most of all just being HERE and enjoying walking the farm. Lots of deer and hare to see and birds. Enjoyed watching the rook babies hatching form our bedroom window. Be back to see them in November.

We should have been here last May but due to covid, postponed. It has certainly been worth the wait. Thank you, Karen, for your warm welcome and home baking. We have stocked up on sausages and bacon from the butchers in Wooler! Can understand why you have so many return visitors – we will be joining them.
Ian and Margret, Lancashire, July 2021
Our 4th visit and so welcoming after lockdown!
Loraine and David, Stourbridge, June 2021
Third time and counting! Thank you as always, Karen and Tom.
Katherine and John, Wetherby, June 2021
Thank you for another relaxing week in your beautiful cottage! We really enjoyed breakfast at the Barn at Beal, and Alnwick Gardens were stunning. We made some stone statues on the beach at Holy Island castle, and the beaches were beautiful. The two rescue donkeys were very friendly and will come over for a head rub, and Mist and Queen [the farm dogs] and the cat were lovely.
Louise, Shashi, Bella and Max, York, June 2021
The most comfortable, welcoming and well equipped cottage we have ever stayed in. The Northumberland coast has been a delight! Cheswick!! Thank you so much, Karen and Tom.
Karen and Janis, Wiltshire and West Sussex, May 2021
Thank you for such a beautifully clean cottage, with such a pretty garden and the wonderful welcome gifts! We have seen hares, birds, lots of beautiful beaches, the waterfall, and St Abbs Head, a day in Edinburgh and a lot of Northumbrian magic! Thank you! The farm is such an inspiration, a haven in such a busy world. It has been such a lovely break for both of us. Thank you for everything.

Lee and Peter, York, April 2021
My first visit and feel sure it won’t be my last. A lovely week… Thanks 😊
Lisa Walden, Maidenhead, April 2021
Our first stay. Cottage facilities, welcome goodies and hospitality excellent in every respect. Walked miles of coast to east, and moor to west, plus the brilliant farm trail. Karen and Tom are an inspiration – they will leave this world a better place!

We really appreciated this very eco-friendly cottage …Thank you so much for a lovely welcome and for a wonderful selection of goodies – the sausages were excellent 😊 We felt as if you had done your upmost to make the cottage as ‘covid-safe’ as possible and we really appreciated that. It meant we could just arrive and relax. It’s so lovely to read in this book of so many children having been given a taste of farm life and the patience and kindness of Tom in allowing them to help feed the animals etc… What you have achieved on the farm here for wildlife is wonderful and inspirational. Loved the farm walk the thousands of wild geese! Thank you for everything.
Philip and Rebecca Dolbear, Sherbourne, October 2020
Karen and Tom, thank you for making the cottage so welcoming. The garden is lovely and we enjoyed walks around the farm trail. The coast is spectacular and we saw dolphins twice! …. Fantastic apple cake!

A wonderful change of scenery as Lockdown eases. Just what the doctor ordered! The mummy peacocks spent a lot of time with their delightful peachicks, with me in the garden – a real treat. Thank you for all your hard work and the splendid food goodies. Much appreciated.
Sue Pelter, Kirkby Lonsdale, July 2020
We were the first visitors back after Lockdown and we couldn’t have returned to a more special place. We’ve been coming here for years and love this beautiful farm and cottages, and especially Karen and Tom and their hospitality and friendship. A wonderful restful 6 days and we were able to help in the Lowick Community Orchard too. We will be back very soon xx
David and Suzanne Tucker, Beverley, July 2020
We have had a wonderful week in this peaceful and beautiful place, We really appreciated the care you’ve taken to heart in providing this very special hospitality. One of the most lovely places we’ve stayed in and thank you for creating such a welcoming environment. We enjoyed meeting the farmyard companions.
Susan Puntin and Leslie Bunt, Bristol, September 2019
We have had an extraordinarily magical and tranquil time at Newt Cottage. Thank you, Karen and Tom, for all the thought and care you put into making our holiday so perfect. Lots of happy and lasting memories made and would love to experience it all again in a different season… or even the same! Thank you for letting us stay. It was one of our best holidays.
Alex, Jo, Esme and Sid, Beckenham, August 2019
We’ve had such a wonderful week in this cosy cottage! We have visited Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh, Edinburgh, Eyemouth and had a lovely mean at The Black Bull in Lowick (we walked there). But by far, our favourite parts of the holiday have been spent here on the farm – pond dipping, walking the farm trail and Tom giving up his time to allow the children to help out feeding the animals and sharing his knowledge with them. Thanks to Karen for a walk welcome, her advice on exploring the local area and especially Easter gifts delivered by Donkey! Thanks to you both for unforgettable memories xx.
Tyrone, Tracy, Emma and Ben Farrar, Mirfield, April 2019
Our first visit to this area and we could not have found a nicer cottage. Karen and Tom are friendly hosts and the welcome pack was simply amazing. Without any doubt, this is the most well equipped holiday cottage that we have ever used. If you have the time, do walk around the farm and across to the Black Bull in Lowick (about 45 minutes) – you won’t be disappointed. Thank you, Karen and Tom, for your great hospitality! 5*
Ian and Marie Matthews, Wargrave, July 2019
We have had such a lovely week! - Thank you Tom and Karen. Your cottage is beautiful and felt like home from home. The kids (and us) have enjoyed just watching the animals and learning new things. The farm has allowed us to slow down and just be! There has been no pressure to get out and do or see as the farm and cottage has provided an oasis of calm and peace. We still managed to get out and do a few castles and lovely beach walks. We went horse riding at Kimmerston today in the sun whish was amazing [ ] We did the obligatory fish and chips at Seahouses and ate dinner at Black Bull Inn (easy cycle or walk). Karen and Tom, thank you! Love what you have done here and we certainly enjoyed the time thinking more about us in our environment in Glasgow. We’ve had really important and interesting ongoing conversations with the kinds about sustainability, recycling and going against the grain. We would love to come back! X
Gill, Al, Ronan and Erin McGeoch, Glasgow, April 2019
Another lovely week here. Thanks, Karen and Tom, for always making us feel so welcome. Back again in October – can’t wait!

Fabulous week, been to lots of beautiful places. Karen and Tom made us feel at home; the afternoon tea and fresh flowers were lovely. Cottage is beautiful. Hope to come back but will definitely recommend to friends and family.
Debbie and Glynn Flood, Macclesfield, October 2018
Unlike many of your other visitors, we hadn’t been here before but absolutely know why people come back! The cottage is perfect, so well equipped and beautifully presented. We did a lot of cooking and everything we needed was here. We love the area, plenty of walking despite some rain, short days and nearly getting blown off Yeavering Bell! The Farm Trail is also lovely – wish we had small children again.
Natalie and Ron, North Wales, November 2018
Nourishing and restorative in every way. Class act! Thank you.
Rob, Naomi, Solomon and Ani Slater, York, September 2018

A lovely week in a lovely cottage!
Ann and Rick Overfield
Spring. Wonderful! Thank you!
Andy and Alison Wood, West Yorkshire, April 2018
Our first visit to Newt Cottage and what a lovely time we’ve had! My favourite part has been waking up every morning and seeing the beauriful peacocks and peahens in the garden. I also enjoyed seeing the newborn lambs and we even had a deer visit our garden once! The doggies on the farm were very cute too! Thank you for the lovely cake and sausages as well 😊
(by Florence aged 12)The March Family, Southampton, April 2018
Our second visit to Newt Cottage and a warm welcome from Tom and Karen. Some fine and sunny days and lots of newborn lambs! Will be back again in September.
Laraine and David, Stoutbridge, March 2018
What a wonderful time of year to be here in this lovely place. There has been a new treat every day – lambs, piglets, peacocks in full feather, deer, hares, rabbits, the nights getting lighter and the days getting warmer (well – a bit – and the open fire helps when it snows!!). The new shepherd’s hut looks as though it will be amazing. We very much appreciate how hard you have worked to make this place so lovely, welcoming, spotlessly clean and how you still manage to do all the day to day farming. Thank you.
Ian, Carolyn and John, Skelton, March 2018
6th time we have stayed here and we will be back; our home from home! Thank you, Karen and Tom, for your thoughtfulness and making our time here so wonderful. It is the only place we can say that continually ticks all the boxes for us. Our retreat in your beautiful part of the world.
Nick and Chris, Merseyside, March 2018
Third time here THIS YEAR! We loved it. Thirty minute walk across the farm to the Black Bull, trip to Edinburgh for the Christmas market and a walk from Wooler up Humbleton Hill, oh, and the beach at Beadnell and a pint at the Ship. All great as ever.
Unsworths, Cartmel, December 2017
Thank you for a wonderful holiday in your lovely cottage. We really enjoyed your hospitality and meeting the dogs and learning about the farm animals. A walk around the farm trail is highly recommended – especially if you get to see deer and hares as we did.
Ian and Carolyn, Skelton, December 2017
Second stay in The Newts, seventh stay at Hunting Hall. Absolutely love it! It's our second home. Thanks again for spoiling us Karen and Tom 😊
Claire, Peter and Emily–Kate Unsworth, Cartmel, October 2017
This is our fourth visit here and we have enjoyed it as always. Walking, knitting, chatting. Thank you!
Rowena and Pratima, Brecon and Oxford, October 2017
The warm welcome and great suggestions meant we enjoyed every bit of the week. Terrific local foods in the welcome basket kept us going, but we also enjoyed food at the Black Bull Lowick and Mielle Patisserie in Berwick. Spinning was great fun – history and good weather helped too.
Fran and Len, Wokingham, September 2017
I've been trying to pay attention to what is so special about this place this week so I can take a little of the feeling home with me… All I can gather is that Northumberland has some kind of actual ancient magic seeping from the ground and Karen and Tom capture some of this magic in the perfect bubble of Hunting Hall. The only solution is to keep coming back for top up sips of the potion! As usual we can't thank you enough and can't wait until next time xxx
The Barker Family, Derbyshire, September 2017
Never ceases to amaze and thrill us. We love it here. Thank you as always for your generous hospitality and kindness, it's the icing on the cake!! We will be back.
Ben and Sue, Eastbourne, September 2017
Here for our 5th visit… and will be back again! Thank you once again for all your kindness and making our stay feel so special. xxx
Chris and Nick, Wallasey, September 2017
What a wonderful week we have had. Stunning weather, stunning Northumbrian countryside and a wonderfully warm welcome and lovely stay here at Newt Cottage. Thank you for your kind and generous welcome basket and the time you gave to share in the ethos and magic the farm. We loved hearing about and living it. We will be back 😊

It was great here because there are 5½ day old piglets and there was a lamb called Agnes. I had a great time 😊 (Verity aged 7)
Charlotte, Mike and Verity, Eastleigh, August 2017
Thank you for such a warm welcome. We have had a lovely time. Learned a lot about farming and conservation. We loved the thought of pilgrims walking past the farm to get to Holy Island.
Peter, Melanie and Agnes, London, August 2017
First visit to Northumberland. Delighted with Newt Cottage, so promptly booked again for 2018. Wonderful hospitality from Karen and Tom. Super garden to relax. Weather mixed but still visited lots of the area. Loved seeing birds on farm and feeding them.

Thank you, Tom, Karen and Margaret, for your very warm welcome to Newt Cottage – cleanest and best equipped cottage we have stayed in. Thank you for all the yummy goodies in your welcome basket – your delicious cake kept us going all week and we fought over the last slice of your delicious bread! We have had an amazing week in your special part of Northumberland and will certainly return to walk your coastline and hills again. Thank you and all the very best for the summer and in the future.

Kathleen and John, Wetherby, June 2017
Just the most perfect week. Enjoyed everything.
Jill and Ken Cairns, Doncaster, May 2017
This is our second stay here and we've really enjoyed it. This week has gone far too quickly! We've had such a lovely and relaxing time on the farm and we've got to know the peacocks and hens, especially the little red hen (could we take her away with us?!) Thank you Tom and Karen – you have put so much care and love into our stay.
John and Sue Cartledge, Warrington, May 2017
What a fabulous place you have here, we have really enjoyed our week. Plenty of places to visit if you can drag yourself away from this wonderful place. It is like a picture-book farm. Karen and Tom are so devoted to making the place special. Loved the little special touches especially the cake and cider!! Ate at the Black Bull Lowick – lovely food, and beer very welcoming stuff. We will be back again… think Hunting Hall may be our new destination of choice. Thank you and take care xx
Shirley and Dave Hall, Burton on Trent, May 2017
Our first time in ‘Newts' after six consecutive years in ‘Fuffins', and we loved it. Did all our usual things; Holy Island, Etal, St Abbs, boat trip to Longstone, and the Grace Darling Museum at Bamburgh was really good. Newly refurbished Black Bull was a bonus - great food and beer! See you next year and thank you.
Unsworth family, Cartmel, April 2017
Another week in this lovely, cosy cottage gone far too soon. Amazingly sunny week and some great walks - including the farm trail. Many thanks to Tom for giving us the tour of the lambing sheds and to Karen for the lovely cake and goodies – and to both of you for creating such a sole replenishing retreat for weary townies like us. Keep up the good work!
Heather and Anthony, Sedgefield, March 2017
What a beautiful cottage with such thoughtfulness and care in every detail which we deeply appreciated. Thank you.
Abhayadevi and Kuladharini, Glasgow and London, March 2017
Here we are again. Back for the fourth time and by no means our last. We immediately relax as soon as we see the signs for Beal, then Kentstone. It's like our second home here at Newt Cottage. Karen and Tom are really special people who make a difference to the land, environment and to people they meet (like us).

I am usually the care giver. When I come here I feel spoiled and cared for. Nick is visibly more relaxed and the peace (together with the sound of hens and peacocks etc.), has almost a healing quality. We go home rejuvenated with our batteries charged. Northumberland is without doubt a beautiful, special place. Hunting Hall is our bolt home. Thank you both so much for all you do. We strive to live as eco friendly as possible. Being here is definitely where we find peace. Love, Chris and Nick.
Nick and Chris, Wirral, February 2017
What a wonderful time we have had. The cottage is beautiful, cosy and warm and we have been looked after very well by Karen and Tom. The weather has been very kind to us, a little cold but sunny every day. The cold doesn't bother you when you can come back to such a beautiful cottage and farm. Thank you Karen and Tom for making our stay with you so relaxing.
Margaret and Malcolm, Greater Manchester, November 2016
Beautiful accommodation, superbly looked after. Enjoyed our kayaking up the Tweed and at Budle Bay. Lovely walks by the sea. Great week in all areas. Big thank you to our hosts.
John and Vicki Haig, Leeds, October 2016
Another wonderful week in this very special place. Thank you! xx
Rowena and Pratima, Brecon and Oxford, October 2016
We have had another magical week here at beautiful Hunting Hall. So magical that time seems to have been speeded up!! We have fitted a lot in with highlights being seeing my big bro coming 5th in the Kielder Marathon!...We also visited Warkworth hermitage for the first time which was fascinating and well worth a visit. This trip also saw our first visit to Alwnick Castle and Garden- I don't know why we've waited so long, it was brilliant! Especially loved the treehouse. Final shouts out to the chippy at Coldingham with yummy chip dinners to be taken to the beach…, the wonderful weather and of course, as always to our superb lovely hosts Tom and Karen. xxx
Lynda, Ian and Kirsty, Derbyshire, September 2016
Thank you so much for a really beautiful stay. We love Hunting Hall and will definitely be back. This is our debut in Northumberland and can't believe we waited so long to visit. The cottage is perfect and we have felt so at home on the farm! Great to get away from the big city – we will be recommending to our friends and family. Thank you also for the delicious cake, bread, biscuits, honey and sausages…
Katherine, Chris and Florence Whyatt, Manchester, September 2016
Hunting Hall in autumn glory, and weather to match, has surpassed our hopes for this week. The love and care (hard work) of these beautiful acres always inspires us to go home and try a bit harder with our own small corner of York. As always, thank you.
Jeremy and Jan Howat, September 2016
The peaceful tranquillity and calming atmosphere of both Newt Cottage and the farm is matched only by the warmth and generosity of the welcome offered by you to your gorgeous home. Enormous thanks for allowing us to spend a brief moment in this timeless place and a fond farewell to cheeky dogs, peacocks, pigs etc! (esp. Cleo the goat) x

We love this beautiful place so much we want to live here! Third visit since March last year and we have seen the farm now in spring, autumn and summer. We really enjoy watching the wildlife on the farm trail and listening to the birds and even the wind blowing through the trees – can't imagine ever staying anywhere else – thanks to Tom and Karen for making this place so special!! xxx
David and Janet Tanner, Cheshire, July 2016
Unlike (seemingly!) everyone else the weather was unkind to us but this was still a gorgeous place to spend a week. Thank you so much for your warm welcome and the use of this wonderful cottage on your idyllic farm. We saw the barn owl (with prey) a roe deer with 2 fawns, had a very close encounter with some hare, as well as long lists of other wildlife - and all within a few minutes of ‘home'. We also had a magical afternoon on the Farne Islands (our one bit of sun!) as well as time in Berwick and on Holy Island, plus a quick visit to Alnwick/Alnmouth. We love Northumberland and will return. Thank you.
Sue and Dave, Cheshire, June 2016
It's also our 2nd home!!! How many times..? We leave but there's a bit of ourselves here always
Joy and Nick, Packington, May 2016
Soooo good to be back for our 6th visit to our second home 😊 We have loved seeing the area in a different season had have found lots of new places to explore, as well as seeing our favourites in a new light. Roughting Lynn waterfall was truly magical with the bluebells! Thank you Karen and Tom for making us so welcome as usual, it's been lovely to see you again, as well as getting to know Karen's Mum and Dad (who were a pleasure to meet). Counting down the days until next time… xxx
Lynda, Ian and Kirsty, Derbyshire, May 2016
We've had the most heavenly week and are so sad to leave. The children have loved the chickens and the peacocks – not to mention the bunnies and piglets. The cottage is beautiful and you really understand hospitality. We will definitely be back. xxx
Steve, Natalie, Niamh and Ethan, Cumbria, May 2016
We've all had a really fabulous holiday. Beautiful cottage and gardens. The children have especially enjoyed spending time on the farm – even got to feed a very young lamb, and got a tour of the lambing shed from one of the friendly girls working here. We also enjoyed the farm trails and dipping pond. Racing sticks down the burn in the sunshine kept us busy for hours. The beaches at Bamburgh, Alnmouth and Beadnell were great for sand castling… Thanks!
Ben, Vanessa, Cormac and Carys, April 2016
A wonderful week with the Northumberland weather very kind – the piglets and lambs have been the highlight. Thank you for you hospitality and we hope to return soon…

Thank you for making our week feel so special. We feel ‘looked after' and pampered. Karen your bread and sultana loaf were delicious. Thank you for all the wonderful products in your cottage. Even the china and silverware all added to a feeling of being valued. Our warm welcome: a blazing fire, Northumbrian pipes playing and, of course, a cozy warm cottage. Bliss! From day one we said we wanted to come back again and we shall. It's a beautiful part of Northumberland and we could not wish for a better holiday experience. Thank you xx
